These are called osteoblasts, and they create or give rise to the musculoskeletal and connective tissue structures. As they mature, they are associated with the production of teeth and bone. Osteoclasts on the other hand, are responsible for the breakdown of bone, and effect the absorption and removal of bone. In other words, osteoclasts produce joint and bone degeneration. These substances are called mediators, but technically are known as cytokines and prostaglandin E-2 (PGE2).
